What it is:

Kairos Outside offers a comfortable, non-judging retreat for women to support each other as they journey through the incarceration of a friend or relative.

Where we serve:

Kairos Outside serves women from all around the state of Connecticut. Retreats are held Friday through Sunday. An effort is made to ensure that the location is accessible to all who desire to attend.

What's required:

Volunteers must be willing to:

  • Be prayerful
  • Complete the Kairos Outside team application to be a team volunteer or the Kairos Day Angel application to serve as an angel (provide transportation to guests, help with dining hall set up, etc.)
  • Complete the necessary 32-36 hours of Kairos training and teambuilding.  Trainings typically occur on Saturday mornings in Waterbury
  • Be available for the Weekend retreat which normally takes place in the springtime and runs from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon
  • Return for "Reunions" which take place about 4 times each year.  Smaller family group reunions may occur more frequently
  • Participate in fundraising for the event
  • Witness the transformative power of Christ's love and the restoration of hope 

The Kairos Outside Weekend is a 2 ½ day program based on a series of talks by volunteers designed to address the pain of enduring separation from the one inside and the judgment of others from their community. Guests hear the talks in small family groups.


The program is interspersed with music, prayer, and fun activities. 


Weekends take place annually.  Our next event will be held in September, 2026.


Kairos Prison Ministry is a Christian program, although no religious affiliation is necessary to be a Guest. Any 20-year-old or older female family member whose life has been impacted by the incarceration of a loved one, or a woman who was unable to attend Kairos Inside while in prison, is eligible to attend Kairos Outside. From the moment I arrived at the Kairos Outside retreat, I was welcomed by so many sisters in Christ. Throughout the weekend women, who wanted to, shared their experiences with having a loved one who is incarcerated. This weekend was the first time I felt I could openly talk and feel what I am experiencing, in a non-judgmental environment, surrounded by love. During the retreat, I was taken care of - emotionally and spiritually and had homemade meals prepared for me too! What I value most about the weekend is the connections I made with the women of Kairos. I hope to do for other women, what they did and are doing for me.
